๖. ความเป็นมาของวัดกำแพง
หลวงพ่อคงเมื่อมาจำพรรษาอยู่ที่วัดสว่างอารมณ์ ท่านเป็นพระที่เคร่งครัดต่อการปฎิบัติพระธรรมวินัย มีวัตรปฎิบัติสม่ำเสมอคงเส้นคงวา จึงเป็นที่เลื่อมใสศรัทธาของชาวบ้านเป็นอันมาก ทั้งท่านได้เปิดสำนักเรียน สอนหนังสือให้แก่เด็กๆ ที่เป็นลูกหลานชาวบ้านที่อยู่ในหมู่บ้านใกล้ๆวัด และสอนให้แก่ผู้ที่ต้องการจะบวชเป็นพระภิกษุสามเณร ทั้งนี้เพื่อผู้อุปสมบทบรรพชาจะได้ศึกษาพระธรรมวินัยให้ลึกซึ้งกว้างขวาง จากพระไตรปิฎกด้วยตนเองได้อีกด้วย หากพระเณรรูปใดมีปัญหา ท่านจะช่วยชี้แนะเป็นอย่างดี การที่หลวงพ่อคง ประพฤติปฏิบัติตนเคร่งครัดอยู่ในพระธรรมวินัยเสมอต้นเสมอปลาย เป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีแก่บรรดาศิษย์และชาวบ้าน นับว่าเป็นประโยชน์ต่อพระศาสนา ประชาชน และประเทศชาติ ชาวบ้านก็ยิ่งมีความเลื่อมใสศรัทธามากขึ้นตามลำดับ ชาวบ้านมักจะเรียกหลวงพ่อคงว่า “ท่านที่มาจากวัดกำแพง” ครั้นเรียกกันต่อมาว่า “ท่านวัดกำแพง” ในที่สุดก็เลยเรียกวัดนี้ว่า “วัดกำแพง” มาจนตราบเท่าทุกวันนี้
